AFL Hall of Fame

In 1996, the VFL/AFL celebrated the Centenary year of the Australian Football League.  As part of the celebrations, The Australian Football Hall of Fame was established to help recognise the contributions made to the sport of Australian rules football by players, umpires, media personalities, coaches and administrators. It was initially established with 136 inductees. As of 2014, this figure has grown to 257, including 27 “Legends”.

In 1996, the AFL announced 136 inductees into the Australian Football Hall of Fame. These players had made their names in the AFL/VFL, in South Australia and in Western Australia and had been selected by the AFL Hall of Fame committee.

The subsequent addition of 138 inductees has increased the AFL Hall of Fame to 274. Among this number are 27 AFL Hall of Fame Legends (there is a restriction that no more than 10 per cent of inductees may be Legends). Individuals are selected for Legend status if they have caused the game to change significantly for the better.
